Book Review Between (Crossroads Saga) by Mary Ting

Book Blurb:

As the alkins head back to Crossroads, Claudia leads her normal life; but not for long. Having a special soul, Claudia attracts danger, and she soon finds out who Gamma asked to watch over her. The Twelve, known as Divine Elders on Earth, are very much involved when they find out that Aliah, one of the God’s first angels, escaped from the Abyss when the gates were opened by Aden. Needing Claudia’s soul to escape the only place Aliah can reside–a place between Heaven and Earth–he sends his demons in search of all Claudia Emersons on Earth. Taking her soul will enable him to be released from Between and cross over to Crossroads, which would give him immense power. As more secrets are revealed Claudia learns about the venators—nephilim, demon hunters. Now two opposing forces must work together in order to save Claudia and humanity from the most dangerous angel ever created. But along the way, trust becomes a big issue. Will love be enough to keep Claudia and Michael together? Who will make the ultimate sacrifice? Who will betray them all?

My thoughts:

I enjoyed this sequel and am anxious to see what happens next. This book literally starts where the last book finished. Aliah, one of God’s first angels, was set free from the Abyss.  He wants to capture Claudia’s soul so that he can take over Crossroads. This is to be avoided at all costs. The venators and new additons-alkins, which are more earth bound angel types, they are working together to find Aliah and to keep Claudia safe from them.  I have to say that Davin is my favorite character, because he knows how to not take himself too seriously. I love that the Alkins have become friends with Claudia.

There is a bizarre love triangle in this book, well I wanted it to be there actually. Austin, an Alkin, is just as captivated by Claudia as Michael. Austin made a cameo in the last book, but at the time we thought he was just a normal human boy. Don’t get me wrong, Michael is a great character, but in the end how realistic is it that Claudia will be able to spend her eternity with him? I think because of where the book leaves us at the end, that my hopes of Claudia waking up and choosing Austin could be a possibility. How can you go wrong with either one though. They both are extremely attractive, attentive, and adorable.

I could write more about Ms. Ting’s book, but I want you to read it. I do not want to give it all away. Just know this, by the end of the book Claudia’s life will never be the same and her past no longer defines her. Haunting, yes?  Pick it up people, it’s well worth the read and totally appropriate for a Young Adult audience.
