Author Interview Kathi S. Barton and Excerpt

1. What is your favorite genre to read? Do you even have time to read with all the
time you spend creating entertainment for the rest of us? I don’t really read all that
much anymore. And when I do, it’s usually a short story or something I find on
the internet. I wish I had more time but I’m having so much fun as an author that
I can’t seem to pull myself away from the computer long enough to do it. I’ve
nearly given up tv for writing.

2. Do you have a favorite author? That would be like asking me to pick out a
favorite snowflake. Oh my there are so many out there now that I can’t pick.
When I can read a book I have no favorite gene so to name any would leave out a
great many. I’ll just stick to everyone. How’s that?

3. How long have you been writing romance novels? Just a little under four years.
I know right? I have a very good muse and he keeps me busy thus having so
many books out. I have a different writing skill than most. I write more than one
book at a time and many different genre’s.

4. What inspires your creativity? My muse. Sometimes it’ll be something so simple
as a word. Sometimes it will be from something I see someone doing. It could be
a flower or a tattoo as well. Anything and everything brings a little bit of my story
writing to life. And I’m glad for it too.

5. What has been your biggest challenge as a writer? Not really as a writer but being
a writer. I still have a problem with my fans. Not with them but that I have so
many. There are still times when I am surprised when someone recognizes my
name or simply sees me with one of my books. Yes, I carry them around at times
to give away. lol. But to see people reading them…still takes my breath away.

6. If you could be an extra character in any one of your books, which book would it be
and what would your role be in that book? Not the character but to be able to be
with one of them. Duncan. I just love that guy. He cracks me up with the way
he messes up some of his words but his devotion to Aaron and especially Sara
blows me away. I think I’d like to spend a life time with him.

Excerpt– (rated r selection).

Chapter 1

Phil stood outside the hotel room for several minutes before he could work up the nerve to knock. She was going to be upset; more than that, she was going to be pissed at her brother too. He moved to the door and raised his hand to knock when it was jerked open and there she stood.
Phil Campbell would never be able to see her without his breath catching. She was beautiful, yes, but it was more than that. Her body, her scent, called to him. He needed her, needed her with every bone, every cell, hell, every part of his body. She was his mate, his other half, and they both knew it. And standing there fresh from what he assumed was a shower, with her bath robe on, made him think that her brother had the right idea in just claiming her.
Holly Force was a werewolf. Her family, especially her sister-in-law CJ, had been his friends long before he’d met the entire family. Phil had known about Holly, but had never thought to approach her as his mate because she was a wolf and he a vampire. But a long talk with her brother had made him realize that if he didn’t claim her he’d never be happy.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Before he could answer her, there was a small ding behind him, signaling the elevator coming to a stop on this floor. Turning to see who got off, he nearly lost his balance when he was suddenly jerked inside the room and the door was closed behind them.

Author Interview Sallie Lundy-Frommer and Excerpt!

Tell us about your life, where you live, why you write?

Let’s see my life, where do I start?  I  went to elementary school in, oh you didn’t want that much information.  (*Smile*)  Okay, I’ll get serious now.  I grew up in a huge family.  Nowadays, the average American family is 2.6.  And no, I don’t know what that .6 is.   But, I’m the youngest of ten children.  I have six brothers and three sisters.  In the rural south, large families used to be common because lots of children were needed to work the farm.  Anyway, when I was four years old, my family, to the urban northeast by one of my brothers.  We moved away from the cotton fields and brutal, labored existence.

If we hadn’t moved, I have no idea who I would have become.  Back then, especially among the poor, on farms working the crops was more important than education. Fast forward to today, a bunch of school, several jobs and a decade or two later and viola, here I am.  I’m an author.  And as for why I write, I don’t want to sound cliché.  But, I wrote “Yesterday’s Daughter” because the story  was in me, just hankering to get out.  Yes, you can ignore the push to write.  I did for years because I didn’t think of myself as a writer.

Do you have a favorite author?

I have many favorite authors that I like equally but for different reasons.  So instead of naming one favorite author, I’m naming a few.  Some of my favorite authors are J. R. Ward, Jean Auel, Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, Christine Feehan, Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle, Jeaniene Frost, Dee Henderson, Stephen King, Larry McMurthry, Nalini Singh, George Shuman and Jhumpa Lahiri.

Does music inspire your creativity?

Big time yes, I listen to music, but no particular style.  My tastes are very eclectic.  Motown, country, opera, pop, funk, alterative, blues…love them and more.  Music inspires me in that it effects my mood which might overflow into the development of sentence or sense. I think sometimes it happens only on a subconscious level but other times I’m very aware of a song or melody influencing me.

What fuels your writing?

Coffee…(lol)  Fuel…I can only say the voices and dreams, does that mean I need a shrink? (*big grin*)  I see scenes in my dreams and hear conversations between characters and start writing following their lead.  There’s no conscious inspiration or source of fuel, just dreams and voices.

What has been your biggest challenge as a writer?

The traditional publishing machine makes it nearly impossible for new authors to get noticed, to get an agent or a publishing deal.  So, l learned about self-publishing.  It’s been quite the adventure and challenge since I knew “zero” about self-publishing prior to writing Yesterday’s Daughter.

What do you think of being an author?

Writing, for me, is an unexpected and adventurous experience.  But now it’s part of me.  The characters, the stories, they take me to places and times where I meet supernatural beings, help combat evil and make friends.  Being able to tell Malachi and Sapphira’s story has been a magical gift for me.  So for those with a hanker write, I say do it.  Write  your book, write your poems and novellas.  And I’d suggest getting to know other writers. Surround yourself with those who know the craft.  Join writers’ blogs and websites.  And of most importance, write anything and everything in your heart.

How long does it take you to write a book?

It took just about a year to write the first draft of Yesterday’s Daughter.  Then it took about four or five months of re-writing and tweaking to finish up.

Now a lot of people think that being a published author makes you “holier than thou”, for lack of a better term. How do you feel about being a “published” author?

Nothing holy here, I’m just surprised and proud of myself.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love traveling, although I have done much of it lately.  When I’m at home, I like to garden.  I have tons of plants and each one has a name.  And yes, I do talk to them. I enjoy going to bookstores even if I’m not planning on buying anything.  I enjoy being around tons of books.  Also, I love going to the movies and Broadway musicals.

What is your favorite comfort food?

Oh God, I love all things pasta!  If I had to pick only one pasta dish, it would have to be lasagna.  What’s not to love?

What do you think makes a good story?

Relatable characters are a must for a good story.  Good stories need characters with whom the reader can become emotionally invested.  If readers don’t care about the characters, they’re not going to finish the book.  This emotional attachment draws them in and then you sustain their interest with action and suspense.

Fun random questions:

  • Dogs or cats?

I like both…but, I’d really like a dog, first.

  • Coffee or tea?

I like both…I’m a coffee drinker in the morning and a tea drinker in the evening or if I’m not feeling well.

  • Dark or milk chocolate?

Milk Chocolate without a question!!!!

  • Rocks or flowers?

Flowers…but I like rocks too.   Sometimes I see a pretty stone while walking and bring it home to place in a pot with one of my plants.

  • Favorite color?

Black

  • Crayons or markers?

Both….But sometimes you want the texture and feel that you only get with a crayon.

  • Pens or pencils?

Both….depends on what I’m writing.

Excerpt:

“When he looked up, his violet eyes were glowing with emotion so
intense that Grace trembled. “Will you sit with me?” he asked.
But, she didn’t move; Grace wanted to hear what he had to say. No,
she needed to hear what he was about to say, but she wasn’t a complete
fool. She wasn’t getting any closer to the goliath of a man. She remained
standing in her corner. When she didn’t move, he began to reveal the
secrets that he’d waited decades to tell her.

“You will find it very difficult to believe and accept what I have to say.
I only ask that you listen to me and when I finish I will leave you, if that
is what you wish.”

He took another deep breath and jumped off the precipice. “I knew
your parents. I know your people. I am like you, different, a blood
drinker.” As he spoke of knowing her parents her face furrowed in
disbelief. She stared into his eyes as her heart accelerated, not because of
fear, but out of hope.

“I have been searching for you all my adult life and at many times
feared you had gone in the Void. But I did not give up;I could not stop
searching for you. In my soul, I knew you still lived.”

Welcome Paranormal Romance Author Sallie Lundy-Frommer!

Book Blub:

Yesterday’s Daughter is full of suspense and surprises as the plot develops. It holds a mirror to contemporary society so we can consider our feelings about people who seem different from us, the assumptions we may make about other groups, and the consequences of those assumptions. Yesterday’s Daughter is an emotionally laden paranormal vampire romance novel woven with layers of betrayal, love and loss. Grace Stone, who later learns her true identity is Sapphira, is a loner who survives abuse in the foster care system after being abandoned as a child. A brilliant student, she escapes from her brutal foster parents as a teenager and creates a life for herself. But, her life is little more than existence; plagued with questions about what she really is, a family that she has never known and the never-ending need to keep her differences hidden. She is alone and lonely, believing it will always remain so until Malachi appears in her life. Malachi, a Guardian of the vampire communities, has searched for his life mate, Sapphira, for decades. He refuses to cease searching for Sapphira even though she is believed dead by all. Conflict arises over the decades between Malachi and his family because of his refusals to accept another mate. But his very soul drives him on to continue his search, knowing that he could not exist if Sapphira were not in the world, somewhere.

Welcome Author Monique Morgan!

Releases October 31st

River Black lives in a world where only the strong survive.
The earth has changed to a brutal climate and the survivors will do anything to
live. The eastern continents unleash a biochemical weapon on their enemies, and
directly onto River’s world. She will have to leave her quiet existence in the
forest and venture to the slaver fortress and further beyond, into the deepest
part of the surviving cities. If she doesn’t die first, or rise infected…

Excerpt:

Aspen was the first to speak, all
of us still slightly in shock at what we had just witnessed.

“We have to clear out the house.
I don’t know if all of them left, or if some of them got in, but we have to
know for sure,” he said, the urgency in his voice clear.

“I’ll take upstairs,” I responded
immediately, wanting to get a familiar perch from above, and recalculate our
current situation.

The fire still burned in the pit
in the entryway, illuminating the three of us as I walked up the curved stairs.
I quickly lost sight of them, the wall turning smoothly into a hall. The
hallway was covered in shadows, the dying embers of fire pits casting light through
the open doors of the rooms.

“Hello,” I called out weakly.

I didn’t like the idea of going blindly
into each room, possibly ambushed at any moment. It would be better to draw
them out into the hall, and cut them down as they ran towards me.

I waited, my body tense and fluid
at the same time, ready to spring if needed. But nothing came. I spoke louder a
second time, my ears straining as my voice traveled down the hall. Once again
nothing came out of the rooms and I walked forward, entering each one and
searching every corner, my rifle always ready.

A few were bedrooms, which I
frowned upon. It was a bad omen to have bedrooms aboveground. It was obvious
that the townspeople had become lazy. I entered one more room that was a study,
a desk crammed into the corner, covered in books. Even in the most stressful
situation, I found myself becoming excited at the plethora of reading material
that was before me. It was rare to see one
book, let alone dozens.

The last thing in the hallway was
the stairs leading to the final floor. Once again I walked the smooth curve of
the stairwell, the stone giving off a sense of protection, although it would do
nothing to help me if I was attacked by the infected.

It was dark down the long
hallway, only one room at the far end giving any light, the rest of the doors closed.
Once again I called out and waited, keeping my eyes on the farthest room. I was
greeted only by the sound of my own voice.

Taking a breath, I pushed open
the closest door, holding my gun out in front of me. I knew the moment I
stepped in the room that I was not alone, there was a presence in the room, a
presence in turmoil. I could almost hear the chaotic thoughts, trapped and
angry. I knew when I heard the low animalistic growl, that I had walked into
the room of one of the infected.

My shoes slipped on the floor as
I walked towards the sound, a trail of blood beneath me, as though someone had
dragged themselves to the door and shut it. I walked around the bed towards the
continued hissing, expecting the creature to come sprinting at me. But it remained
in the corner. I walked closer, and finally saw white gleaming eyes as it
stared at me, a hideous grin on its face.

It was a woman, or what was left
of a woman.

These rooms were bare compared to
the extravagant rooms below. I could only imagine the ones belowground. Logic
would say that they belonged to servants, possibly even slaves. It was clear
that even with the thick window covering the rooms would quickly get hot during
the extreme heat. It would be torturous to be forced to live up here. On a
beautiful day like this, they had all probably had their windows open, the
first to succumb to the plague that had been dropped upon us.

I almost tripped over the two
severed legs that were littered on the floor. It looked like someone had taken
an axe to them, and the brutality of the scene shocked me. Instead of dying,
the woman’s wounds had almost healed, the blood stopping its flow.

The growling increased as the
woman dragged herself by her arms towards me. Her mouth had started the rabid
chomping that seemed a telltale trait of the infected. Bloody fingers reached
for me, just as I lifted the rifle once again and placed it to the woman’s
temple, pulling the trigger with a quickly flick of my finger.

I took a closer look at the
carnage around me, the bloody legs and the limp body of the infected woman.
“Yup, looks like a Zombie to me.”

I wiped the blood from my boots
in the hallway, leaving a creepy trail of red footprints. There was one more
room before the open one at the end, and my hairs rose as I pushed open the
next door. I was greeted by silence, the room empty. Even the shutters were
closed, and from the dust on the furniture I could tell it had been some time
since anyone had been here.

I moved back out into the hall
and walked towards the last room, the light was not coming from a burning pit
but from an open window, the sun shining into the room. My trigger finger
tensed once again, concentrating on everything in front of me. The first thing
I saw was the bed, covered in blood. Another servant was there, axe marks
evident on her body.

But this one was clearly dead,
its head lying a few feet from the body.

“I doubt you will be getting up,”
I said, and that’s when I realized there was someone else in the room.

It was another woman, her hair
dark and her clothes fine. She was not some servant, but a mistress of the
house. She was young, not much older than I was, and she carried an axe that
dripped blood onto the floor as she stared at me.

Author Interview with Natascha Scrivener

1. What is your favorite genre to read?

I generally find myself reading literary fiction. I like books about people and real life, although I don’t mind a teeny bit of magic realism, but only if written by the brilliant Joanne Harris. Other than that it’s just literary fiction, so writing sci-fi/fantasy for THE WIRE really is out of my comfort zone!

2. Do you have a favorite author?
Yes, I have a few! The aforementioned Joanne Harris being one of them, I love Chocolat and The Lollipop Shoes and I’ve just bought Peaches for Monsieur Le Cure so I’m looking forward to getting stuck into that. I also adore Peter Hedges writing (particularly What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and An Ocean in Iowa, i’d recommend both books!) and finally, Virginia Woolf, who I find endlessly intriguing…alot of my poetry has been inspired by her works of fiction and by her life and love affairs.
3. How long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since I was a little girl in primary school! I remember walking to school and playing out elaborate stories in my mind and then I’d get so excited if it was too wet for us to go outside to play at lunch and I could find an old excersize book to write them down in. As for writing as a full-time job I’ve been doing that for about five years now, but I’d always written before that.
4. Does music inspire your creativity?
Sometimes. It depends what it is, I’m incredibly (and probably annoyingly) picky about music. I generally only like glam rock, with the odd exceptions. I adore David Bowie, so his music and his life have influenced alot of my writing, but if I hear a sad or slow song (I can’t stand slow songs) I get instantly cross and feel awful! If I’m in a shop I have to leave, that’s how ridiculous it is. And I can’t stand the radio, if it was on and any modern music came on I would have to stop writing because I would be too angry and uncomfortable to continue.
After admitting this I’m now hoping at least one person identifies with this!
5. What fuels your writing?
Clearly not modern music (!)
Alot of things do. I can be anywhere and I could hear or see something that would make me want to write it down for future use or write about it there and then. Watching films and television programmes often prompt unusual poems or pieces of writing from me too. The Wire was greatly inspired by watching my husband play Playstation 3 games like LA Noir and Heavy Rain!
6. What has been your biggest challenge as a writer?
To convince people that ‘I am a writer’. It’s amazing how many people nod along and then ask you what you do for a day job…

Welcome J Naomi Ay!

Welcome J Naomi Ay, author of The Two Moons of Rehnor, a magnificent 5 book series with fantasy, science, and romance all wrapped into one. I’m so happy to introduce her to all of you.

1. What is your favorite genre to read?

I tend to keep switching favorites. Forever and ever and ever it was historical fiction. I swallowed anything that had to do with Plantagenets and Tudors. Then I read only Scifi and then later fantasy. Now I’m action
adventure but I always like good chick lit.
2. Do you have a favorite author?

Not any one particular. There are just so many. I love the classics and have the entire Jane Austen collection. I love Michael Connelly and Nelson Demille but if I’m moody and want a good cry I’ll read someone like Jodi
Piccoult.
3. How long have you been writing?

I think I learned in first grade. No, seriously. When I was in second grade, the first grade teacher called me out of class and asked me to write a story for the first grade parent’s night. I think she wanted to demonstrate the amazing advances in skills that a second grader would have. Anyway, I wrote and of course illustrated in crayon a very perceptive little piece about a dog and a cat who agreed not to fight or chase each other anymore. This was in the late 60’s when
everybody was building a bomb shelter in their basement so world peace was probably very much on my young mind. The Two Moons of Rehnor series has literally been in development for more than 20 years. I started writing it for fun, out of boredom, for my own entertainment and several times deleted it and then turned around and rewrote the
whole thing again. Now, I’ve discovered that since I have published it, it is officially out of my head and I am able to write other things.
4. Does music inspire your creativity?

Not really. Sometimes there is music I will listen to and immediately think that would be great for a particular scene. If we ever make a movie, this will fit in perfectly. When I write though, I can’t be listening to anything else. It’s kind of weird, alright it’s very weird, but as I write, I have to constantly read back what I am saying. My books are all written in first person narratives by 6 – 8 different characters in the story and since they all have different voices, I literally have to hear those voices to make sure they sound right.
5. What fuels your writing?

Boredom. Sorry, but it’s true. I’m a Type A person who is no longer busy enough at work and the kids are grown and almost grown so my free time is suddenly very abundant. I have to create artificial stress in my life so I give myself new deadlines for book releases and then scramble to meet them. Frustration is also a fuel additive. When I hear about things going on in this world that I don’t like, I cope by diving back into fantasyland and fixing those things on the planet Rehnor.

6. What has been your biggest challenge as a writer?

Commas and apostrophes. I hate all those little buggers. Another challenge has to be patience. I am still in the
process of developing some. That’s one reason I really love self-publishing. In a matter
of literally minutes, a manuscript can become an e-book and in days it can become a
paperback.

Surprise Excerpt from The Kiss by Joann H. Buchanan

Excerpt from THE KISS

By

Joann H. Buchanan

Twilight slashed the horizon like a blade, reaping the magnificent, radiant day. Darkness bled, seeping, sharing the true abyss hidden by the light. Time—past, present, and future—all converged at this moment. Twilight—not dark, not light, but shades of grey that exist in all. Twilight—the reaper of dusk and dawn. Blood and water, myth and legend—clichés full of stories that back the very nature of life. It was in this moment where Cleo found herself. This was her own twilight—the stripping of the past and embracing of the future. Whatever that held.

Pinned, thick hair, lined with smooth edges, moved like a single entity in the breeze, not allowing a single strand to waver out of place. Her skin, fragile and delicate like that of a china doll, rippled with goose bumps on her taut body. Heart pounding, palms sweating, and a small brain worm wriggled its way through her mind. What if I don’t want to be chosen?

Like a veritable prism of color, silent, reverent, stiff robed Elders stood eyes closed, at each of the four corners of the sand garden containing three boulders and two smaller ones centered within the perfect proportionally-raked lines. Palms flat against one another and their elbows straight, the Elders took on a statuesque sight.

A gong sounded. It echoed like the past, bouncing off the present surrounding hills. Just behind the Elders, the rest of the already chosen took their place. They were the Shakya Clan. The defenders of justice. Completing the scene was the rest of the villagers. Those not chosen, who were merely witnesses to the grandiose ceremony, lined the outer edges of the courtyard. The gong sounded again. A line of possible chosen moved in a steady rhythmic cadence. Step together, pause together, step together, pause together, they walked. Each member took their position between the already chosen Shakya and the Elders. Another gong and they disrobed, allowing the delicate clothes to drop to the ground.

“Isn’t this exciting?” Joy whispered to Cleo.

“Shh…not really. I’m cold,” Cleo whispered back.
