Guest Post by Joann H. Buchanan

I am so excited to host a good friend and an esteemed author in her own right. If you recall, a few months back I reviewed her novel, I Am Wolf, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I am so excited to tear into the next book in her Children of Nox Series, The Kiss. Welcome Ms. Joann H. Buchanan!

Guest Post

Thank you for being part of my blog tour for the release of The Kiss, book 2 in the Children of Nox series.

What makes a villain real? What makes you love to hate him and want to hug him at the same time? A two dimensional villain has no depth. We get they are the bad guy and they have no redeeming qualities. The fun villains to read are those who have a certain vulnerability in them. It’s what makes us love Magneto, cheer for the bank robbers in Ocean’s Eleven and even why we all love to read about vampires, werewolves and things that go bump in the night. So what makes a villain fun to read?

For me, it’s all about those simple redeeming qualities all good bad guys have. In I Am Wolf, the bad guy was Ralph. He was a schizophrenic poacher who was bit and from there exploded with evil. What made him fun to write was that his hallucination was a bimbo named Gracie. He is a tragic villain who was abused as a child and never really had any real love in his life. In turn he didn’t know how to love or how to give it. Is that redeeming? No, but it provides an understanding into his psyche. It allows the reader to understand why he is who he is.

What about that so called redeeming quality? In I Am Wolf he wanted to save the world from “aliens” he was sure invaded the planet. Yes, it’s funny but at the same time, he had a heart and every desire to call out what he thought were aliens. He went about it the wrong way, but he did try.

True villains are just as read as you and I. They may not all have the capacity to love, but they do have that one thing they care about the most and that’s what makes them real.

In The Kiss, the villain is Ash, a demon who has been caged under a mountain for centuries. His whole motivation is to escape his cage and get revenge on those who trapped him and those who killed his newborn son. Some would say, “Demons can’t love” and they would be right. However, obsession, something that is often mistaken for love in the twisted minds of our villains—is something they can feel. So there in rests his redeeming quality. The actions of a villain are what make him a villain. They are the ones who don’t care who they hurt. They are also the fun ones to write because we get to do things we have never been able to do out of our own morality.

Villains live on a different moral compass. They are the ones who do things we would all love to do. They are the ones who say what we, the morally in control, wish we could say. Think about this, how many of you have longed to tell your boss they are stupid idiots who don’t know their heads from a hole in the wall? How many have wanted to tell your friends the clothes they wear suck and most people view them as a joke? How many of you have wanted to walk up to a parent on the playground and say control your child or I will? All of us have thought things we have never said.

A villain will say and do those things without giving it much thought. That’s what makes them fun to write and fun to read. We love to cheer when the “asshole” is trampled by life. We love to hate that guy. We love to hate the one who cheats on the character we love the most. We also love to see that villain get what they deserve.

In The Kiss, the other bad guy is a girl. How many of us have had our boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands, wives, cheat on us? How many of us hated the person they cheated with more than we hated the one we loved? So in something like this, who is the villain? Is it the cheating lover or the one he’s cheating with? What if the villain thinks what they are doing is right? Now how does that make you feel?

The truth is, any villain worth reading is going to make us think. He or she is going to make us want to hate them even when we understand them. We all want to see him or her get what’s coming to them because we can relate to the wrongs they are doing.

There was a Mel Gibson film called Payback in which he plays a bad guy. What made us cheer for him was his simple directness. All he wanted was his money back. The people he was going after were worse than he was, so we cheered for his character. The depth of the character was cool because we knew we were cheering for a bad guy and that didn’t matter. A good villain will make you feel something for him. In The Kiss, Cleo is such a person I hope you will love to hate but feel for at the same time. She is the bad guy, or girl I should say. She is also being manipulated by an evil. So does that make her bad or do you feel for her? In the end, I felt sorry for her. That doesn’t mean I make it easy on her. She will ultimately get what’s coming to her. Just not the way you think.

The cool thing about writing a villain is it allows us to all touch the dark side. I mean really when you think about it, we all love to be scared, that’s why we go to horror movies. We all like to see Karma take action on the person we love to hate. And we all want without a doubt, for that person to make us feel something for them, no matter the outcome.

What about emotions and villains? Can they love, laugh or even feel joy? For me the answer is yes and that’s what makes them real. Emotions play an even more intricate roll in creating a good bad guy. They are the heart of what makes them tick. They have a twisted moral compass and that’s what makes them more real than some of the good guys in books. No one person is perfect. The more flawed a villain has, combined with a redeeming quality, the more likely he or she will be real to the reader.

That’s my take on villains. They are complex beings who are fun to write. I can’t wait to hear what people think of Cleo. She, the vulnerable twisted soul who makes life a living hell for the Youngling Pack, was fun to manipulate into doing another’s bidding. Will you feel sorry for her or will you just hate her? That is something I’m dying to find out.

Alexandrea Weis- Author of The Secret Brokers

About the book:

Describe your book in one sentence.

Head of an organization of elite spies, Dallas August is asked to uncover what secrets a reclusive woman, Gwen Marsh, is hiding about a mafia kingpin’s death.

Give me a quick blurb about the book and do pitch on why you think readers will enjoy it.

A roller coaster ride filled with intrigue and plot twists that will leave the read hungry for more, the life of Dallas August, secret broker, is about to get very interesting.

As the head of an organization of elite spies, Dallas is asked to uncover what secrets a reclusive woman, Gwen Marsh, is hiding about a mafia kingpin’s death. Dallas must pose as a bodyguard in order to get close to Gwen. Soon Dallas learns that others are interested in Gwen when he stumbles upon the FBI monitoring her every move. But Gwen does not make it easy for Dallas and he is challenged by her intelligence and stubbornness at every turn. But with the FBI and the Mafia vying for the woman’s information, he can’t afford to lose his objectivity When Gwen finally lowers her defenses and confides in Dallas, his job is done. He returns to his organization in New York. Ann unexpected turn of events leads Dallas back to Gwen’s doorstep, where he discovers the Gwen Marsh he thought he was protecting, wasn’t Gwen Marsh at all. Who was Dallas protecting? And where is the real Gwen Marsh? Dallas August is about to find out how dangerous life can be as one of …The Secret Brokers.

How did you come up with the idea for the book?

It is part of a series but I like exploring the characters in depth. The storyline comes as I write it. I never know where a novel is going half the time and surprise myself in the process.

When did you start writing it, and how long did it take you to finish it?

The entire novel took about 2 to 3 weeks. I write pretty quickly from start to finish. Then I go back through it and fill in more detail. The entire writing process takes about a month.

If your book was made into a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?

I don’t like to pin my characters to an actress or actor in my head. It takes away from what I am writing. I think I would have to go through a lot of casting calls until I found someone who fit what I was writing. There is a lot more to it than looks for me.

 About you as writer:

When did you begin writing?

I was eight and stared with poetry, by high school I was writing mostly short stories.

When did you first think, wow I have made it as a writer?

I am still waiting for that moment. I think all writers are still waiting for that moment.

Do you have any special rituals you do when you sit down to write?

Gum. Always have plenty of gum on hand.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers out there?

Write. No matter what just keep writing. The more you write the better you get.

 Silly questions:

Favorite color? Red

Salty or Sweet? Salty

Favorite author? Ian Fleming

Favorite book? The Nature of Alexander/Mary Renault

One thing you cannot live without? Running.

Vampire or werewolf? Vampire

GUEST POST

My father had an independent production company in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Being raised in the motion picture business, I learned how to run sound, do basic cinematography, film editing, and to be an all-around gopher on
the set. Sometimes, I even did some in front of the camera work as a bit player and background extra. Because of his work in movies, many creative people in the French Quarter gravitated toward my father’s Creole cottage on Dumaine Street. I grew up associating with Jazz musicians, actors, writers, and talented artists. But probably the person who influenced me most during that time was my father’s good friend, Tennessee Williams. He was a kind and patient man who would sit with me for hours discussing the intricacies of his writing. From him, I learned about character development and the value of good dialogue. He taught me how to build personalities into characters that would resonate with readers. He showed me the importance of searching for the right words to best reflect the idiosyncrisies of each and every character. Funny, how you can forget so much from so many, but I remember every bit of advice Tennessee Williams taught me.

Looking back, I can see the synchronicity of circumstance having set my course in this creative direction from a very early age. If I had not been born in the city of New Orleans to a motion picture making father, or raised amid the bohemian people of that uniquely eccentric society, I might not have evolved into the writer I am today. However, I did not always embrace my creative side, and for years pursued a career based in medicine and practical knowledge. But like pressurized lava simmering beneath the surface of some volcano, the innate creativity I was born with eventually came erupting to the surface. I finally let go of my apprehensions about turning away from my medical training and started to embrace my stifled urges. It was then I re-discovered my writing.

I came to realize that happiness is not found in living some monetary-based lifestyle, but in following a path that yields to the yearnings of your heart. We are all born to do something fortuitous on this planet; we just have to stop trying to wonder what that is, and just do what makes us happy. After all, happiness is always the outcome when you finally learn to follow your dreams.

Charlotte Blackwell, Author of the Embrace Series

ImageGuest Blog with Charlotte Blackwell

Everyone has a dream in life, some want to be a doctor while others want to be a famous rock star. I never really knew what I wanted to be. I spent over thirty years going through the motions of life. I got married had a baby, got divorced, waitressed, met the man of my dreams, went back to school, had a another baby, finished school, worked as a nurse, got married, had another baby and became a stay at home mother. I asked myself, what’s next? What am I to do now? I have the most important job in the world, raise children. Now what if I fail at that too?  My husband and my three children are the world to me and I want nothing more than for my family to be happy and follow their dreams. How do you teach a child to follow their dreams when you don’t even have any of your own? Well a few short years ago I finally found my dream, to write. I now have something to inspire my children as much as they inspire me.

In November of 2009 my oldest daughter handed me a book and said mom you have to read this. I wasn’t an avid reader but reluctantly took the book. I then read the entire series of 4 books in as many days. I wasn’t able to stop reading and thought to myself I can do this. I always enjoyed writing, but it was more of what I was feeling. Could I write an entire novel? Well I have answered that and it’s YES. Matter of fact I have write several in just over three years and even got a publishing deal. The first four books in my Embrace (YA paranormal romance) Series have already been released. I accomplished so much when this happen. I wrote some books, I got published, I taught my children that anything can happen if you work hard and believe in yourself and most of all I now have a dream.

Immortal Embrace released on July 1, 2011, with Forbidden Embrace, Mystic Embrace and Everlasting Embrace all releasing in less than a year of book 1. Who could ask for more? Well its human nature, we always want more. So my next dream was to become a bestselling author. Oh wait I was lucky enough to hit the Amazon best seller list with Immortal Embrace only 6 months after its release. So now what? Well I have an agent who is now shopping the Embrace series around for film options. Wouldn’t that be amazing? I guess this is where the magic of dreams comes in to play.

I’m a huge believe in the power of positive thinking and the laws of attraction. I could write pages on pages of personal experience to prove this theory.  One example is my husband. He was laid off from his job and was having a hard time finding another, due to cut backs and such. He hadn’t worked in months. I told him to make a list of things he wants, bet to do it as if he already has it. The last item on his list was I have a great job to support my family. Within five minutes of putting the pen down, the phone rang. My husband was offer a job at a higher rate of pay than his previous one. Now I also made a list of my own. One of the things on my list was to be a bestselling author by January of 2012. This came dream came true for on January 14 and 15, 2012 Immortal Embrace made it to #1 on the Amazon Kindle best seller list. It not only made lists in the US but also in the UK, Germany and France.

So now what? Well I just make more dreams and continue to believe in myself and those around me, know that they can always come true. So what I say to all of you is dreams are important, have them, embrace them and believe in them and yourself because anything is possible. If you can’t believe in yourself, who else can? Reach for the stars and don’t stop there, keep reaching further and your life will be full of everything you ever dreamed of.  I used this posted on another blog as well, but kept it and tweaked it a little because I really believe in the message behind it and decided to use it again so that others can may be get the message and learn to believe in themselves a little more. Anything really is possible if you just believe, after all I did and all my dreams are coming true, so why can’t yours? Well I believe they can J ~ Charlotte

Interview for Charlotte Blackwell, Author of the Embrace Series

Image

Guest Blog with Charlotte Blackwell

What inspires you? We all have something that inspires us. It could be our children that inspire us to be better people, or out grandparents that inspire us to be hard workers. I have several things that inspire me, but when it comes to writing my inspiration comes from music.

Music can do so much to the human body. It can bring back a memory that has long been forgotten. It can make you think of a place you want to go, someone you once met. Music can bring all kinds of feelings and emotions to the surface. A certain song can make you cry, laugh, or even feel love just by hearing a few notes from it. Some songs can even bring out frustration if you don’t like that song, artist or genre. When you have your first kiss or you dance with the love of your life, you will never forget the song that played. My husband and I first danced to a Grease Lighting Remix at my cousins wedding. Now every time I hear that song I laugh because neither of us can dance.

So how do I find inspiration from all the different songs out there? Well I draw on the feelings that I get when listening to a song. I pull from the lyrics of the song and what that song means to me or more so what it means to my characters.  A song can make a variety of things happen to the story or the characters involved in the story. When I first started writing I wouldn’t listen while writing only before I would write. Now I have music on all the time.

Now what kind of music do I listen to when I write, well get a pen and write these bands down because they are AMAZING! I listen to all genres, but I have really taken to the pop/punk genre. Marianas Trench is my all time favorite band. Their music all tells a story and each time I listen to it I get something different from it. From there I have found other great bands that I have also added to my playlist. Bands like Fighting For Ithaca, Halfway to Hollywood, For One More Day, Hey Bombshell and so on. Now country music also offers a lot to my writing too. I like listening to it when I have to write a romantic scene or a sad scene.  I also know lots of authors that listen to classical while they write. So whatever music you like to listen to, next time sit down, close your eyes and just see what it makes you think of. You will see how powerful music can be to your mind, heart and soul.

Now of course there is one…no three other things that inspire me and that’s my children. They inspire me to follow my dreams, be the best I can be and always try my hardest to succeed. No matter what it is that inspires you to do better in your life, grab a hold of it and let it take you where ever your dreams lead you.

Enter for the giveaway at Totes n Notes.  There are lots of wonderful prizes!

Excerpt from Immortal Embrace by Charlotte Blackwell

“So, Sophia, the winter formal is only a few weeks away, and I was hoping you would     allow me the privilege of escorting you,” Nathanial asks with complete confidence.

“I would be honored,” I agree.

“Perfect.” He smiles, and we both let out a little chuckle. He excitedly moves closer and hugs me.

At this moment, time seems to slow. We gaze into each other’s eyes. As we move slowly toward each other, I can feel his breath and hear his heart racing. I begin to feel weak. I have to be careful, and every instinct I have tells me to turn away, but whatever piece of a heart I have left wants to hold him and never let go. As we move closer, our lips touch ever so softly. Nathanial’s arm slowly tightens around my waist, pulling me even closer. This is the most amazing feeling, like millions of fireworks exploding inside my body. The kiss continues with his left hand cupping the back of my head, moving around to my cheek, and stroking along my cheekbone. His right hand is still wrapped around my waist. This kiss is so soft, gentle, but utterly passionate. A crowd starts to form, and everyone is in shock. Nathanial has never been interested in anyone, let alone kissed anyone before. At least that’s what I’ve been hearing from the gossip.

We don’t even notice until Alexander taps Nathanial’s shoulder. “Hey, get a room, bro, or else we should start charging admission for this,” he jokes.

We part and realize we are in the school courtyard with an audience. As is par for the course for his usual class clown antics, Nathanial turns to the crowd and shouts, “Thank you, thank you! Hope you all enjoyed Act 1. Please tune in next week.”

I bury my head in his chest and giggle a little.

Forbidden Embrace Synopsis from Chapter 11

“DANIKA! Where the hell are you?” I holler.

Alexander comes running out of his room, “Sophia, calm down. Killing her is not going to solve anything.”

“Alex for once mind your own business, this is between me and that little bitch. I knew she was trouble from day one” I yell with such anger and passion.

Nathanial is hot on my heels trying to calm, however unsuccessful he may be. The rest of the family comes to see what the racket is all about.

“What on earth is going on here?” Isaac asks rhetorically. Finally I see Danika laying on the sofa in the family room, watching TV and obviously pretending not to hear me. She does a little stretch and glances over her shoulder at me only to turn back to her program. With one swift motion, I grab her by her neck yanking her to her feet.

With attitude she yells, “What the heck is up your butt Sophia?”  Breaking free from my grasp she steady’s herself.

“Like you don’t know; would you care to explain why you seem to feel entitled to kiss my boyfriend?”

“I…I…I’m sorry,” she stutters, slowly inching further away from me.

“Sorry? It never should have happened. Do you see why I can’t trust you? You have zero respect for anyone, not me, not Nate, not even this family.”

“Oh Sophia get over it, it was no big deal. Honestly just let me explain.”

“There is nothing to explain, you crossed a line here and I’m so done with you.” I feel my features begin to change as rage takes over, first the burning in my eyes and the ache in my jaw. I can’t restrain myself any longer. I’m going to kill this girl. At the same moment Alexander reaches for me, I lunge at Danika tossing her to the ground. One fist after another I punch her square in the face, each hit bringing satisfaction. Blood spatters from one side of the room to the next. With one fist tangled in her short mess of fire red hair, I slam her head to the ground. Lifting my arm and tightening my fist I prepare to strike her again.  Elijah, Alexander and Isaac pull me from the beaten young vampire, and restrain me. Florence and Constance move in to help Danika.

“Will you let me go? I want to deal with this once and for all.” I pull and push, but even my strength is no match for the two older male vampires. Through my peripheral vision I notice Nathanial and I can see the terror and what I perceive as disgust on his face. Immediately I begin to calm down, feeling the features of my face retracting, embarrassed and ashamed that he saw me in all my primal rage. “I’m fine, just keep her away from me for tonight; we can deal with this in the morning. I do hope that someone will discuss the issue of her behavior with her, I can’t promise I’ll stop next time.” I push the boys off of me and race back to my room.

Excerpt Mystic Embrace – Chapter 4

Crawling into bed next to me, Matt pulls up the blankets and wraps his arms around me in a loving embrace. I’ve been so lucky to have him in my life. He’s supported me since day one even when I tried to push him away after finding out I was witch. He’s always been so understanding and supportive of my friendship with vampires and was even open and honest enough with me about his guardian training. I bury my head deeper into his chest, realizing how lucky I truly am to have him in my life. Matt leans down and kisses my forehead. With a slight smile, I look up at him slowly moving towards him for a soft gentle kiss.

“I love you Matt. Thank you for being here for me,” I whisper with a soft sincere tone.

“Ebony, I couldn’t love anyone more than you.”

He lightly runs his hands through my hair and places them on either side of my face with a passionate look, he kisses me again. Pulling myself closer to him and moving up slightly, leaning on one elbow, I place one hand on his cheek, rubbing his ear lobe between my thumb and index finger. We begin kissing each other, more passionately than ever. He slowly runs his hands down my back. I get up onto my knees in front of him. He pulls himself up to the sitting position, and I climb on his lap. He begins to kiss my neck and moves his hands up the back of my shirt on my bare skin. I reach down, grabbing his shirt and pull it up over his head. With a slight push back, I kiss his lips then taking my time and move with gentle passion to his neck. Running my hands over his bare chest I kiss my way down to his navel.

“Ebony, I want this more than anything, but are you sure this is the right time?” He says as he pulls me up towards him.

Excerpt from Everlasting Embrace chapter 5

Walking into the learning annex with Nathanial and my family at my side, I feel a sense of pride at what we’ve accomplished. We walk down the stairs to the front of the class. Looking up, I see the many rows of chairs all equipped with fold down tables. The students begin to get settled in their seats and pull of various types of note books.

Isaac steps forward. “Thank you everyone. Please settle down. I would like to explain how things are going to work here. We’ve ordered homeschooling assignments, tailored to each of

your educational backgrounds. We’ll be set up in the main corridor, and first each of you will see someone at table one and will be issued a school ID. Then you will proceed to the next table and get your books and assignments. The following table will issue you a locker and combination; then you may go and put your books in your locker. If you didn’t notice, the lockers are located just down the hall from here, in between the classrooms. When you return, go to table four, where you will receive a Mac-book and your Internet pass code. This will be very important, as most of your assignments are online through a site called Moodle. We also use Rosetta Stone for languages; you will be required to learn at least French, Spanish and Latin. If you wish, you may take on extra language courses as well. The mornings will be allotted for educational training, and there will be instructors at your disposal for any help needed. We’ll be able to contact a certified teacher through the homeschooling department if the help we have to offer does not suffice. Your physical and power training will be in the afternoons. All your fight training equipment is already located in your rooms. If you have not found it yet, I suggest you look in the drawer under your bed. Fight training will consist of learning of other supernatural entities, magickal powers and other training tailored to your unique needs and abilities. We will be taking you in smaller groups after lunch, and you will each receive a proper tour. Anything that you need is located here, and if it isn’t, we can get it for you. You are not prisoners here and will have outdoor time, as well as free time. Does anyone have any questions?”

We search the wide-eyed students, but everyone is quiet. “Alright then, we will meet you in the front in ten minutes. Thank you for your attention,” Constance adds. Then we proceed back up the stairs and out to the main entrance, where Alexander, Nathanial and Dakota set everything up this morning. Skah and his wife will be here later as they will be helping to run the school. His new wife, Waniyya, majored in mythology in college. Although she is mortal, her knowledge and understanding will be much needed. I think they will both be great assets to the school.

Author Interview for Elizabeth Seckman

Past Due, by Elizabeth Seckman.

Interview Questions

I am a mom, a wife, and an incurable day dreamer. I have a degree in counseling from Marshall University and a license in social work. I have way too many pets because I repeatedly fall for the “we’ll take care of it” line from my kids.

Please tell us about you novel, PAST DUE.

Jenna Austin is a widowed, single mom living on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She is barely keeping her nose above water as the costs of living in paradise and raising a teen-age boy outpace her artist’s wages. Traveling home from a shopping trip, her car breaks down. Jenna is frustrated and thinks life can’t get much worse, but then she comes “nose to chest” with the very handsome and oh, so wealthy, Tres Coulter. Most girls would swoon, but not Jenna. She has a history with Mr. Coulter and no amount of sweet words or empty promises will make Jenna trust him again.

What inspired you to write it? My sister, Cathy. She requested I write a book for her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. I said fine. She said she wanted it on the beach. I said fine. She said she wanted it to include the moving of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. I said fine. To get even with her micro-management, I patterned Jenna after her. That’s why Jenna is a slightly anal retentive artist who can’t cook. Burning a box of Jello? My sister totally did that.

Who is your favorite character and why? In PAST DUE, my absolute favorite character is Maureen, Jenna’s mother-in-law. She’s dumpy and common; wise and giving. I’d love to have her on my buddy list. She’d keep me supplied in cookies and bring me chicken soup if I was sick.

What made you decide to write a book? I’ve always written…but it was something I did for pure enjoyment. I wrote three books before I considered querying. It was my husband who prodded me to take them public. He has faith in me. And he still thinks I’m as hot as when I was twenty. Blind, crazy man. I just adore him.

Who are the writers that inspire you the most? Dixie Browning. My sister (again Ms. Cathy) “found” her books first. She was so in love, I bought her one of Ms. Browning’s books for Christmas and requested an autograph for my sister. Ms. Browning sent the nicest dedication and when I thanked her, I mentioned I’d always dreamed of writing. She said go for it! I sent her a few pages to review and sent me a note back. It said, “You have talent, now learn the craft, and I have no doubt you will see your work in print”. I kept that card and every time I got a rejection, I said to myself, “Oh, well, Dixie says I will.”

Where do you get your inspiration? Mowing the lawn, driving, or waiting to go to sleep at night. When my real world is quiet, my imaginary world is running amuck with activity.

Time for some fun!

What’s your fave color? Pink. I’m a girly girl.

If you were an animal what would you be and why? A pampered house cat. Nobody bosses the queen.

What is your fave food? My pudginess is a testament to the fact that I love everything! Oh, and chocolate can’t be listed as a fave…it’s an essential nutrient. A dose of chocolate is like taking a vitamin.

What is the one writing tip you want to pass on to others? Read your final draft out loud. Wherever you get tripped up and tongue tied…you probably have some awkward sentences going on.

You have the floor, what is the one thing you want to pass on? Forget luck. Rely on hard work.

Past Due Sneak Peek

We are so fortunate to get a free peak into Past Due by Elizabeth Seckman.  I hope you enjoy!
Jenna perused the wine shelf. Gourmet screw top, gas station wine was the answer to her chilled flesh and growing head ache. That and a hot shower. The selection was far from overwhelming, so she chose with ease.  She tucked the bottle under her arm and headed for the check out.
On her way to the counter, she took a gander at Tanner. He bent over and ran his hand across the tire tread then stroked the chrome hub cap.  She hoped he didn’t get down and crawl under the stupid thing. She shook her head and walked on. . .straight into a mound of sturdy warm flesh. Jenna cringed, then opened her eyes to find herself nose to chest with a well formed male body. She felt her cheeks flame with embarrassment. “I am so sorry.” She answered without looking up.
            “No problem. . .Jenna.”
The voice rang familiar. Jenna, in an instant, felt a moment of mystical calm. A rightness in the world kind of feeling. But, this feeling was instantly replaced with full blown, blood draining, knee weakening panic. “Tres.” The word nearly choked her. Her heart beat so rapidly she thought it might leap from her mouth if she opened it again. She looked over her shoulder at Tanner. Fortunately, he was still preoccupied with the Bat Mobile.
“So, how have you been?” He asked the question slowly, with an emphasis on
each and every word.  Jenna doubted the friendliness of the question. It seemed more like the beginning of an interrogation. Like where were you on the night of September 7th? Simple question, kill yourself answer. Jenna gulped. She’d declare the fifth if she had to.
